A Letter Home Dear Parents and Family, Welcome! This year and this program present a wonderful opportunity for you to embark with your child on a discovery of what Catholics believe. When you engage with your child’s studies at home, you make this learning relevant for your child and show how it is important in your own life. The third-grade book in the Christ Our Life series presents the main truths of Catholicism as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed. Children study God as he is revealed through Scripture in creation, in his interaction with his Chosen People, and in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. They see that they are called to be part of God’s holy people in the community of the Church. Children meet Abraham, Ruth, and King David—all models of faithfulness to God’s call. Their stories remind children that they, too, are called by God to be his holy people, having a part in Jesus’ mission of leading all people to God the Father. Children learn that Abraham and Ruth were holy people who said yes to God even when what he asked of them was challenging. As children learn how David used his talents and gifts from God, they are encouraged to develop their own gifts to help others as they praise and glorify God. Children meet more holy people in the form of Saint Francis and Saint Clare and come to understand what it means to be holy. Then children learn about Mary, the Mother of God. Mary’s heroic yes encourages them to respond willingly to God and to trust him, just as she courageously did. Finally, children experience Jesus’ call to the Twelve Apostles, to other disciples, and to Saul, who then became the apostle Paul. The stories of these ordinary people and their extraordinary responses to God’s call show children that they can proclaim Jesus’ message even in the small things they do each day. In this unit, then, children learn about God’s call to people throughout the ages. Each chapter ends with a Chapter Review that includes essential chapter content, a Your Turn activity, and an interactive quiz. At each chapter’s conclusion, children bring home Families in Mission pages. Using these, you can further explore the teaching, grow in your faith, and be inspired to go forth as a family of missionary disciples. Chapter 5 includes a Unit Review. with a QR code to scan to play the Stump the Shepherd unitreview game. CHAPTER 1 God Calls Us by Name “Hi, Marty!” “Tina!” “Mario!” Excited voices rang out as friends greeted one another after vacation. Leah felt strange and alone. No one called her name. No one knew her. Then she heard “Leah!” and looked up. Miss Link called out, “Boys and girls, this is Leah Su. She’s in our class this year. Leah has come from Miami, Florida.” “Hi, Leah!” “Welcome, Leah!” children called from all parts of the room. Leah smiled as she looked around. Everyone called her by name. Now she belonged. We Are Family You belong to your family at home. When you were baptized, you were also welcomed into another family: the Catholic Church. You belong to the big Christian family of all people who believe in Jesus. At your Baptism, someone who is a confirmed Catholic agreed to guide you throughout your life in following Jesus as a Catholic. A person called to do this for a child being baptized is a godparent. Your godmother and/or godfather are likely relatives or close family friends and have a special place in your family. You have two special names that show that you belong to the family of Jesus. Now you are called a Christian and a Catholic. You also belong to the great human family of people all over the world. All these families belong to God. God Called Abram to Believe In the Bible, we learn that long ago, God called a man named Abram. God told Abram to leave his home and his country for the land God would show him. Abram believed that God would take care of him. He did as God told him and went to the new land. There God gave Abram and his wife new names and promised them a son, saying: Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so . . . will your descendants be. . . . No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a multitude of nations. . . . As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. . . . She will give rise to nations. Genesis 15:5, 17:5,15–16 Abraham believed what God said. Although he and Sarah were very old, they had a son. They called him Isaac. He was a great joy to them. God Gives the Gift of Faith Abraham always believed in God’s loving care. He did what God asked even when it was hard. Even though we cannot see God, he always calls us to believe him. At Baptism, we receive the gift of faith. This gift makes it possible for us to believe in God and all he has made known in his Word and his deeds. We need the Holy Spirit to help us believe. But believing is also a free choice we make every day. We believe that God made us and that we are his children. We believe that God takes care of us in everything that happens. Just as God spoke to Abraham, he speaks to us in our hearts. He helps us know him better. His grace helps us do what he tells us even when it is hard. The Church supports and strengthens our faith. The Church helps us see that God wants us to be truly happy. 5 God Calls Us Chapter 1 SAMPLE E

God Called Ruth to Believe The Book of Ruth in the Bible tells about a young woman named Ruth. She was from Moab, a country where people believed in false gods. Ruth learned about the one true God from her husband and his mother, Naomi. Naomi was kind, and Ruth loved her. When Ruth’s husband died, she stayed with Naomi. One day, Naomi decided to go back to Bethlehem, the city in Israel where she had been born. Ruth wanted to go with her. She said to Naomi: Wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people and your God, my God. Ruth 1:16 Ruth went with Naomi to Israel. In her new country, Ruth worked hard every day. She gathered grain in the fields of a man named Boaz. Boaz was a good man. Before long, he married Ruth. They were very happy together. God blessed them with a son, Obed, who would become the grandfather of King David. Into the family of David, many years later, Jesus, our Savior, was born. God called Ruth to believe in him. She learned about God from Naomi and the Israelites. God was pleased with Ruth and gave her the gift of faith. Ruth knew God and loved him. 6 Unit 1 God Calls Us to Faith S SAMPLE

God Calls You to Believe God calls to us in many ways. You may hear or sense God speaking to you directly when you pray. God may also call you to help others, as he did with Ruth. He gave Ruth a sense that she should be with and care for Naomi. This led Ruth to marry Boaz. She had a son, which was part of fulfilling God’s plan. When you feel called to help someone, to keep someone company, or to give support to someone, you are responding to God’s call to show his love in the world. Abraham and Ruth had faith in God. They knew and loved God. You received the gift of faith at Baptism when you became a Christian. What things do you do that please God? Teachers Write the names of people who help you learn about God. CHAPTER IN MISSION Do these pages at home as a family. Families Continued on next page. 1 As Catholics, we gather to hear the Word of God and celebrate the sacraments. The Holy Spirit sets our hearts on fire and sends us forth as disciples to live our faith. “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15 Know and Proclaim Read and discuss the introduction and the chart below. We seek to know the truths of our Catholic faith. Then we proclaim our beliefs by what we say and do. We Know Our Faith We Proclaim Our Faith God gives us the gift of faith. We know that God made us and loves us. We can live with him forever because of his Son, Jesus. As Catholics, we show our faith in God in many ways. One simple way to show faith is to pray before meals. Doing so is an outward sign of gratitude to God for what he has provided for us. At Baptism, we become part of another family— the Catholic Church. Parents dress their babies in white for Baptism to show their belief that the child is “clothed in Christ” and reborn in the Holy Spirit. God speaks to us in the Bible. The stories of Abraham and Ruth teach us that God calls us to have faith in him. Many Catholic families pass down family Bibles from generation to generation. There they record important dates and events, such as when a child is born and baptized or when someone gets married. Test Your Catholic Knowledge Fill in the circle that best completes the sentence. Then discuss the correct answer. When we are baptized and join the Church, we are called to ❍ choose a religious vocation. ❍ attend religious education classes until we are 21 years old. ❍ share our faith with others. ❍ pray the Rosary daily. Families IN MISSION A Catholic to Know Invite one family member to read aloud about Saint Mark. Then discuss how his example can guide our lives. Although Saint Mark, one of the Gospel writers, lived during the time of Jesus, he did not know Jesus personally. Instead, he learned about Jesus from his friend Peter. Peter’s stories made Mark love Jesus so much that he wanted to write them down so others could read them over and over again. What if Peter had never told Mark about Jesus? What if Mark had never written the stories in his Gospel? As Catholics, we are also called to witness and share our faith. Witness and Share These sentences describe what Catholics believe. Invite one family member to read aloud the My Way to Faith statements. Ask yourself, “How do I live my Catholic beliefs?” My Way to Faith • I understand that I belong to the church family because of my Baptism. • I read the Bible because it is God’s Word. • I trust God. • I spread joy because God wants everyone to be happy. • I turn to God when times are hard. Share Your Faith Think of one way to show God your faith in him this week. Write your idea on the lines. CHAPTER 2 God Calls Us to Use Our Gifts From the beginning, God the Father has had a plan to guide us in his love and goodness. As you learned about Abraham, God’s plan involves forming a people. This happens through Jesus Christ and his Church. Using the gifts and special abilities God has given us, we are to lead other people to know and love God. In the Gospel of Matthew, we hear Jesus explain God’s Gifts to his followers using the following parable. The Parable of the Talents In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells a parable about a man who was about to go on a journey. Before he left, the man called his three servants together. He gave them coins called talents to take care of. To one, he gave five talents and to another, two. To the third, he gave one talent. The first two servants used their talents wisely. The one with five talents used them to earn another five, and the one with two earned another two. But the third servant was afraid of losing the one talent the man had given him, so he buried it. When the man returned, he praised the first two servants for doubling the money he had given them. He said, “Well done, my good and faithful servants. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share my joy.” Then the third servant returned the one talent he had been given. The man was angry because the servant did not even try to use his talent. So the man took the talent away from him. The servant lost the gift that was given to him because he did not use it. David Used His Gifts David was the greatest king in the history of Israel. God gave David many gifts. David used his gifts to praise God and help God’s people. In the First and Second Books of Samuel in the Bible, we can read about David and the ways God blessed him. David was a gifted songwriter, shepherd, protector, and king. He used his gifts in service to God. Word to Know psalm A prayer in the form of a poem David the Songwriter Saul was king before David. David was a little boy when he first became known to King Saul. The king learned that David could play the harp beautifully. In this way, he was able to calm Saul when the king was sad. David then began writing songs that were prayers to God. A prayer that was written as a song is a psalm. David continued writing psalms of praise and thanks to God. God Gives Us Gifts Chapter 2 13 SAMPLE E

David the Shepherd David took good care of his father’s sheep in Bethlehem. He saved the sheep from being carried away by wild animals. When God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to look for a new king, young David was called in from tending the sheep. Samuel knew that David’s heart pleased God. He poured oil on David’s head. This was a sign that God had chosen David. David the Protector Although too young to be a soldier, David stood in defense of Israel. He used the skills he had learned while protecting the sheep in his father’s flock. A giant named Goliath was sent to attack God’s people, the Israelites. Still just a boy, David went to face Goliath alone. With God’s help, he defeated Goliath with his slingshot. David used his skill to protect Israel and bring glory to God. David the King David was crowned king after the death of King Saul. David earned the respect of his people. He asked God to stay with him and rule with him. David served his country well as its leader. In the Second Book of Samuel, we can read David’s last words. In these verses, David describes his relationship with God. The spirit of the Lord spoke through me; . . . “One who rules over humankind with justice, . . . Is like the light at sunrise on a cloudless morning,” . . . He has made an eternal covenant with me. 2 Samuel 23:2–5 14 Unit 1 God Calls Us to Faith S SAMPLE

We Can Help One Another Discover Gifts Sometimes it’s easy to see our gifts. We might be good at sports or at showing younger children how to do things. We might be good at making other people smile or laugh. Sometimes we don’t know we have a skill until someone else says, “Hey, you’re really good at that.” We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us see and use our abilities. A Moment with Jesus Think about all the wonderful gifts that God has given you. Ask Jesus for his help in using your gifts and in seeing other people’s gifts. Thank Jesus for his goodness. Developing Gifts Look at the pictures. Write each person’s skill on the line next to the picture. Saint Francis Answered God’s Call Francis was a rich young man from Assisi, Italy. He loved to have a good time. He went to parties almost every night. He wasted his time, money, gifts, and talents doing foolish things. After some difficult times in his life, Francis heard God calling to him. God showed Francis what was really important in life. Francis started to change his ways. He often visited churches to pray. God was telling Francis to live a simple life so he could care for others and preach about Jesus. Francis gave away his belongings. He cared for people who were sick or poor. He loved and praised God for all the things in his creation. Francis became a holy man and a much-loved saint. He is known as Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis Loved Animals There are many stories about Saint Francis’s love of animals. One story tells us about Francis preaching to the birds. Francis told the birds to praise God for the blessings God had given them. The birds sang to show God their joy. In another story, Francis helped the people of a village and a wolf make peace with one another. He helped the people and the wolf see that they could be friends. He told the wolf not to hurt anyone. Then Francis asked the villagers to care for the hungry wolf. Francis showed compassion. He taught the people and the wolf to be kind to one another. A Moment with Jesus Saint Clare Answered God’s Call Like Francis, Clare was born into a wealthy family in Assisi. She was very beautiful and gentle. The finest young men of the town wanted to marry her. But Clare had met Francis of Assisi and wanted to love and serve God as he did. Like Francis, she was joyful, and she loved everything God had made. Clare liked to be alone to reflect on God. She wanted to give her life to him. She gladly gave up all she had in her beautiful home. On Palm Sunday in 1211, in a small chapel within the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi, Clare offered her life to God. To help her do so, Francis cut her hair and gave her the poor clothing of a Franciscan. She became Sister Clare. Sister Clare went to live in a convent near Assisi. She spent her days praying, fasting, and working for the love of God. She was brave, cheerful, and kind. She helped many people hear God’s call. Other women joined her, and together they formed the Poor Clares. The sisters did not own anything, but relied on the kindness of others. Clare was the leader of the community for 42 years. She inspired people to trust in God. In 1234, invaders came to attack Clare’s convent and the city of Assisi. As those around her panicked, Clare remained calm. She told the others not to be afraid, but to trust in Jesus. The invaders were closing in on the community. Some were already climbing up the walls. Clare went to an open window and held up the Blessed Sacrament. At the sight of the Blessed Sacrament in Clare’s hands, the invaders turned around and ran away! Families IN MISSION Do these pages at home as a family. CHAPTER Continued on next page. 3 The Holy Spirit shares his grace with us. We can bring others closer to Christ by living our faith. I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:6 Know and Proclaim Read and discuss the introduction and the chart below. We learn about the saints in order to understand how they responded to God’s call. Then we work to be like them through our words and actions. We Know Our Faith We Proclaim Our Faith God calls us to be holy. As Catholics, we answer God’s call when we put him first in our lives, when we are loving, and when we treat people fairly. Jesus is still with us today through his Church. In the celebration of the sacraments, Catholics receive the grace to grow in holiness. The lives of the saints show us examples of how to be holy. We keep reminders of saints, such as medals, pins, and holy cards, to inspire us to be holy. Test Your Catholic Knowledge Fill in the circle that best answers the question. Then discuss the correct answer. Which saint gave up his riches to follow Jesus and is known for his love of animals? ❍ Saint Mark ❍ Abraham ❍ Saint Nicholas ❍ Saint Francis of Assisi Scan the QR code for the answer to the question and to access other Christ Our Life resources for families. 25 Christ Our Life® Grade 3 SAMPLE E

Families IN MISSION A Catholic to Know Invite one family member to read aloud about Saint Martin of Tours. Then discuss how his example can guide our lives. As a young man in the 300s, Martin of Tours wanted to become Catholic. His parents would not allow it and insisted that he become a soldier. This was difficult for Martin. When he was old enough, he was baptized and lived his life more like a monk than a soldier. Eventually Martin told his army commander, “I have served you as a soldier; now let me serve Christ.” After great difficulties, his commander let him go. Now free, Martin preached Christ’s message and lived it by the example of his own life. Witness and Share These sentences describe what Catholics believe. Invite one family member to read aloud the My Way to Faith statements. Ask yourself, “How do I live my Catholic beliefs?” My Way to Faith • I follow the example of the saints to deepen my faith. • I receive the sacraments to nurture my faith. • I have reminders of the saints to inspire me. • I show God that I love him by helping other people. • I serve God when I care for his creation. Share Your Faith Think of ways you can follow the examples of Saint Francis, Saint Clare, and Saint Martin of Tours. As a family, write your ideas on the lines. Tell your family’s ideas to a friend. Invite friends to share what they might do to be like these saints too. Be a model of Christ’s love for others. Saint Martin of Tours 26 Grade 3 Christ Our Life® S SAMPLE
