Call your child%u2019s attention to the Word to Know feature. Read aloud the definition for Sign of the Cross. Make the Sign of the Cross on your child%u2019s forehead, and say a short blessing, %u201cYou are a child of God. God loves you, and so do I.%u201dLead your child in prayer using the A Moment with Jesus feature. Pray the Sign of the Cross to conclude the prayer.The Sign of the CrossRead aloud the sentences at the top of the page. Say: When we pray the Sign of the Cross, we trace a cross on ourselves. Have your child raise his or her right hand and refer to the pictures to make the five gestures without the words. Then repeat the gestures, adding the words. Say: When we pray the Sign of the Cross, we bless ourselves by asking God to bless us. Discuss times you can pray the Sign of the Cross. Point out the picture at top left and ask your child to describe what he or she sees (children praying before a meal). Then talk about the top right illustration (the outside of a church) and the bottom illustration (people worshiping God inside a church). Explain to your child that he or she will learn about God and about some holy things we see in church. Spend some time on the bottom image, asking your child to point to different people and objects (crucifix, altar, priest, deacon, cantor singing, church members going to Holy Communion).Have your child identify the Scripture passage (at the bottom of page 1). Then explain that the words are from our holy book, the Bible. Show the Bible. Next, read aloud the Scripture passage.If you choose, scan the QR code on the page and watch the video together.Chapter 1: Jesus Is Our FriendPoint out the picture at the top of the page. Ask your child to describe the photo. (children smiling, friends, etc.) Ask: How can you tell that these children are friends? (They are smiling and laughing; they are close to one another; they are hugging.) How do you know that someone is your friend? (Friends like to be with us; they show their love by doing kind things for us.) Share a story about you and one of your friends.God Gives Us Friends Point out the picture at the bottom of the page. Ask your child how we know that Jesus wanted the children to be his friends. (He is smiling at the children; he wanted to be with them; he is blessing them.) Say: The children are hugging Jesus, which shows that they love him. Jesus is our friend. He wants us to be his friend.Read aloud page 3. God%u2019s Son, Jesus Read aloud the page and have your child point out the words Jesus and Christ. Explain that Christ is a title given to Jesus after his Resurrection. It means %u201canointed with oil.%u201d Have your child draw him- or herself in the Jesus and Me activity. Ask: What did Jesus say to let us know he is your friend?
