When people went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, they were anxious to see the sites where Jesus lived and died. Eventually, following in the footsteps of the Lord on the way to his Death became an important part of the pilgrimage. The stations as we know them today came about when it was no longer easy or even possible to visit the holy sites in Palestine. In the 1500s, villages all over Europe started creating replicas of the way of the Cross, with small shrines commemorating the places along the route in Jerusalem. Eventually, these shrines became the set of 14 stations we now know. The important point to remember about the stations is that they are a prayer and Catholic devotion. They are not an exercise in simply remembering events from the past. They are an invitation to enter into the final hours of Jesus%u2019 life and to experience who Jesus is. We open our hearts to be touched, and it leads us to express our response in prayer. Jesus wants to%u00a0use any means available to move our hearts so that we know his love for us.At each station, we use our senses and our religious imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus%u2019 suffering, Death, and Resurrection. The stations can allow us to visualize the meaning of his Passion and Death and lead us to gratitude. They can also lead us to a sense of solidarity with all our brothers and sisters, especially those who suffer, who are unjustly accused or victimized, who are on death row, who carry difficult burdens, or who face terminal illnesses.244 What Catholics Should KnowPRAYING THE ROSARY1. Their enemies in other nations were threatening to attack them. They were ruled by King Ahaz, who did not listen to God. Their nation was weighed down by the consequences of their sins, which had led to all sorts of suffering and injustice. It was hard to feel hopeful about the future. They were probably wondering, When will things get better? Does God still care about us?God gave Isaiah an answer to those questions. He told Isaiah that he had not forgotten his people and that he had great things in store for them. A time was coming, God said, when a young woman would give birth to a son. The son would be given the name Emmanuel, which means %u201cGod with us.%u201d The coming of this child would be an occasion for great rejoicing. The child would be a king, but not a king like Ahaz. This new king would be able to bring lasting peace and salvation to everyone. This was good news indeed! God%u2019s people had to wait a long time for this Prince of Peace, but the day finally arrived when Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God. In Matthew%u2019s account of Jesus%u2019 birth, the gospel writer made it clear that Jesus was this Emmanuel who was mentioned in Isaiah%u2019s prophecy. All the hoping and waiting had been worth it. God was taking care of his people in a way that few could have imagined. God was with them in person, living among them.Chi-RhoLITURGICAL CALENDARThe liturgical calendar highlights the feast days and seasons of the church year. But there are many more saints in heaven who don%u2019t have feast days on the calendar. We celebrate all the saints on the Feast of All Saints, or All Saints Day. Anyone who has died in God%u2019s friendship and grace has gone to be with him in heaven. So when we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, we celebrate them too. Every one of us has reason to rejoice on this special day.By learning how the saints lived, we can learn more about how to follow Jesus and someday become saints ourselves. Sometimes we read about the saints and think that we could never be as good as they were. But the saints were not perfect. They were ordinary people. Every saint felt hurt, lonely, and frightened at times, just as we do. They sometimes failed to do God%u2019s will and sinned, just as we do. But when they did so, they asked God to forgive them and changed their ways. They continued to trust in his love. They listened to God and talked to him each day in prayer. The saints faced difficult situations, as do we. Some may have found it hard to be kind when they were angry. Others may have had a hard time saying no when their friends wanted them to do something wrong. Because they wanted to serve God, they did good even when it was difficult.1 Feast of All SaintsEach saint served God in a different way. Some saints loved God deeply from the time they were children. Other saints lived lives of sin and suffering before they turned to God. Some were leaders of the Church or leaders of countries. Some were people known only in their towns and villages. Each saint was born with different gifts and opportunities. Each used his or her talents to serve God, though what they did and how they did it might be different.Every saint had one thing in common. Every one of them loved God more than anything else. They all went through difficult times, but how glad they must be now for all the times they were unselfish and faithful to God. Now he has given to them the unending joys of heaven. On the Feast of All Saints, we ask the saints to help us serve God faithfully until death. We thank them for giving us models for how to live like Christ, and we ask them to watch over us.215-232_5282_SE_G5U6_SSL.indd ~ pg 217 ~217LoyolaPress. 11/15/22 3:45 PMFinal Review 11/15/22 Editorial Approval _______Celebrate a Scripture Prayer Service. We Celebrate pages off er ways to gather together to praise and thank God through Scripture and prayer.Nurture a Sense of Catholic Identity.Special Seasons and Lessons provide options for learning more about the liturgical year, feasts, memorials, and solemnities.
